Fennia completes successful implementation to TIA 7.4 – on time and on budget

The Finnish insurer upgraded from TIA 5.0 using TIA’s Co-existence extension, which allows customers to run both old and new TIA frontends on the same database.

Fennia offers competitive high-quality non-life and life insurance and asset management services. They were using TIA 5.0 as their core system for over a decade. In early 2016, in line with their future ambitions as a digital insurer, the company decided it was time to upgrade.

Fennia wanted all the features and functionalities of TIA's latest version, but as they had so many customizations, it would have been costly to do a one-to-one upgrade. They chose to use the TIA Co-existence extension for a quicker and less resource-intensive integration.

Proof of concept leads the way

The upgrade process started with a proof-of-concept analysis that offered excellent insight into potential upgrade challenges. This insight was calculated into the cost and time estimation of the upgrade, and they decided to start the project.

"We felt confident that with TIA's expertise we could run a solid, cost-effective upgrade."
- Ritva Vapalahti, Development Director at Fennia

Application Development Director at Fennia, Ritva Vapalahti, says "The Co-existence solution seemed like a reasonable solution before we ran the proof of concept. And afterwards, we felt like we had an even better understanding of the project and the gaps we were trying to fill. We felt confident that with TIA's expertise we could run a solid, cost-effective upgrade."

A smooth, advantageous process

The project ran successfully following the established schedule and was completed on budget in May. Along the way, Fennia was able to take advantage of the new functionality offered by the forms UI in 7.4, such as backdated MTAs.

"It [Co-existence] gave us flexibility and let us commit to a much smaller development and investment effort compared to a one-to-one upgrade process."
- Ritva Vapalahti, Development Director at Fennia

Vapalahti continues, "Now that the project is live, we feel confirmed in our decision to use TIA Co-existence. It gave us flexibility and let us commit to a much smaller development and investment effort compared to a one-to-one upgrade process. And now we are in a very good position for our next steps in developing non-life insurance services.
